Lula and Ministry of Sports pay tribute to Oscar: 'Greatest idol of Brazilian basketball'

The tributes to Oscar Schmidt, who died this Friday, in São Paulo, at the age of 68, continue in full swing. A few hours after the death of the Brazilian sports legend, President Lula published, on his social media profile, a text recalling the achievements of the world basketball idol.

“Oscar Schmidt, the “Mão Santa”, was the greatest idol in the history of Brazilian basketball and one of the greatest scorers in the sport. An example of obstinacy, talent and love for the national team’s shirt. Over the decades, he united the country around the courts, with unforgettable shots and indisputable leadership. He competed in five Olympics and became the highest scorer in the history of the Games”, wrote Lula.

Idol of the Brazilian team, “Mão Santa” leaves a legacy of almost 50 thousand points and five Olympics

The Ministry of Sports, in turn, reinforced Oscar’s “brilliant career” and “impressive marks”, such as the 49,737 points that place him as the second highest scorer in the history of world basketball, behind only Lebron James.

Read an excerpt from the note from the Ministry of Sports:

“For the Brazilian team, (Oscar) left an unforgettable legacy, he is the greatest scorer in history, with 7,693 points. Highlights include the historic gold medal win at the 1987 Pan American Games, in Indianapolis, over the North American hosts, as well as memorable participation in five editions of the Olympic Games: Moscow 1980, Los Angeles 1984, Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996, always with excellent performances and protagonism.

Born in Natal (RN), Oscar Daniel Bezerra Schmidt not only elevated Brazil’s name on the international sporting scene, but also inspired generations of athletes and basketball lovers, becoming a symbol of talent, dedication and love for the sport.

In this moment of pain, the Ministry of Sports sympathizes with family, friends, fans and the entire sports community, expressing its most sincere condolences. His legacy will remain eternal in the history of Brazilian and world sport.”
