MDB pressures Lula to expand alliance to the center and discusses vice for 2026
The dispute for the re-election of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) is already beginning to reorganize the party board, and the political center emerges as decisive territory. For the Minister of Transport, Renan Filho, victory in 2026 involves a broader coalition than the PT’s traditional base, with center parties such as the MDB playing a leading role.
In an interview with the newspaper The GlobeRenan stated that the political design under construction seeks to reduce the space of the extreme right by expanding moderate alliances.
According to him, occupying the center is not just an electoral choice, but a strategic necessity given the fragmentation of the conservative field and the difficulty in unifying the opposition.

The minister signaled that the MDB intends to actively participate in this reorganization, but made it clear that formal support for re-election still depends on negotiations.
Among the topics under discussion is the composition of the presidential ticket, including the possibility of the party nominating a name for the vice-presidency. Renan said he will follow this debate, although he maintains his plan to run for government of Alagoas.
Within the party, Renan defended that the MDB uses its most competitive cadres in national elections. In this context, he cited the Minister of Planning, Simone Tebet, as an electoral asset that should not be wasted. For him, parties that block candidacies due to internal agreements weaken their political relevance and open space for leadership losses.
Renan Filho’s statements indicate that, more than discussing names, those around Lula are beginning to treat 2026 as an election of political architecture. The expansion of the base to the center, the role of the MDB and the management of institutional noise appear as central pieces of a chess game that is already in motion.
