Messi's team, Inter Miami opens million-dollar stadium and consolidates MLS project

Miami – In many ways, Nu Stadium, Inter Miami’s gleaming new indoor arena, reflects the club it now houses.

The path to completion was marked by promises, denunciations and bureaucracy. Even now, the stadium is not fully finished, to the point that, after an intense social media campaign celebrating the opening, the debut event on Saturday almost had to take place under restrictive conditions. The rush to open the space included yet another episode of political conflict.

Despite this, there is an inescapable feeling that Nu Stadium will be spectacular and gain relevance over time. It took time and required high investments, but it brims with potential and could become a reference for MLS and football in the United States. This is, in essence, the story of Inter Miami.

After a race against time to meet the opening schedule, and with several areas still under construction in and around the stadium, the $350 million jewel of the Miami Freedom Park renovation project opened its doors on Saturday night, with almost all 26,700 seats occupied — some only installed on Thursday and Friday of the same week. The Leo Messi sector was taken over by fans dressed in pink and black, the first to experience the unusual experience of watching an active player from a stand that bears his name.

In the end, the 2-2 draw with Austin FC, played on an impeccable Bermuda grass pitch, will be recorded as just one of the 34 results of Inter Miami’s 2026 regular season. A season that has already brought significant frustration with the early elimination in the Concacaf Champions Cup. Still, it could end in success: no club has won the MLS Cup title in consecutive years since 2012 and, despite the obvious flaws, Miami still appears as a candidate to increase its performance at the end of the season and be among the best.

Regardless of what happens on the field, the consolidation of the club’s base in Miami should be the main highlight of the year.

Before the irregular performance, coach Javier Mascherano classified the moment as “a great day for the club… a dream day”, while owners David Beckham and Jorge Mas spoke on the pitch, thanking the fans and celebrating the achievement.

Beckham, in particular, highlighted the long journey from activating his purchase option to opening day, with MLS Commissioner Don Garber praising the former England player for his work behind the scenes, including his presence at sparsely attended city council meetings to make the project possible.

The premiere was a typical Miami event, from the long pre-game line in the VIP area to Marc Anthony’s performance of the national anthem — a symbolic closing for the singer, who had brought the MLS Cup trophy to the stadium last December. Pink glow sticks illuminated the stadium during the pre-game video and throughout the match, while fireworks and smoke of the same color marked the opening presentations. Even Brazilian Ronaldo, recently purchasing an US$8 million apartment in the city, was present as a guest of honor.

The stadium, however, is not yet completed. There are entire sectors unfinished, stairs with construction waste and partially operational food areas. The immediate surroundings still resemble a construction site. Even so, Garber called the venue “impressive” before departure, with the consensus that it will take time to reach full operation.

“Obviously, the second game will be better, as will the third and fourth. As you adapt to a new facility, the experience improves, but I’m very pleased with what was done in the time we had,” Jorge Mas told the Miami Herald.

With all the celebration, he almost forgot there was a match. The warning came six minutes after the opening whistle, when Guilherme Biro opened the scoring for Austin FC following a corner taken by Facundo Torres. Messi equalized four minutes later, with a header, in front of the organized La Familia fans. In the second half, Jayden Nelson and Luis Suárez scored, defining the tie.

“We knew the fans would be there and make a difference. The atmosphere was incredible,” goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair said.

Messi’s presence is evident throughout the stadium, from the official store to the visual communication spread throughout the arena. This is intensified in the so-called Messi Stand, which occupies sectors of the lower and upper stands on the east side.

Although there is no structural difference in relation to other areas, the choice to name a sector in honor of an active player can generate debate. Still, Messi breaks the rule. In addition to the titles he won and the performances that earned him consecutive MVP awards, he renewed his contract until 2028 and will have a shareholding in the club after his retirement.

Long before the launch of the Messi Stand and the start of construction in 2023, there were moments when the project seemed distant. Several construction attempts failed, and the club even played in a temporary stadium in Fort Lauderdale.

Still, this space fulfilled its role, including notable moments such as Messi’s presentation, delayed by storm, and the winning of the MLS Cup in 2025. There is symbolism in the transition from this past to a new phase.

Ambitious projects take time and do not always follow the original plan. With persistence, financial support and influence, the vision can be realized.

Other MLS clubs will also follow similar paths. New York City FC will open its own stadium in 2027, while the Chicago Fire plans to open a new arena in 2028.

Miami’s wait is over. The stadium is not yet finished, but it is no longer just a project.

“Seeing the stadium ready is what impresses the most. We’ve been waiting for this for a long time and now it’s time to enjoy it,” said midfielder Santi Morales.
