Moraes asks STF to mark Bolsonaro’s trial date for alleged coup plot

Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) submitted on Thursday (14) a request to the president of the first class of the court, Minister Cristiano Zanin, to define a date for the trial of the process involving former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and others in the case of the alleged coup plot.

The request occurs shortly after the deadline for the defenses to submit their final allegations.

In the document, Moraes points out that all stages of the process were completed, including the authorized complementary steps, and that both the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) and the defendants have already delivered their final demonstrations.

The expectation within the Supreme Court is that the trial will take place in September, although the official date has not yet been set by Zanin.

In addition to Bolsonaro, the central group of the process includes names such as former Navy Commander Almir Garnier, former Justice Minister Anderson Torres, former Chief of Institutional Security Office Augusto Heleno, among others.

Federal Deputy Alexandre Ramagem (PL-RJ) is also involved, but the progress of the case against him is partially suspended by decision of the House of Representatives.

The former president’s defense contested the accusations, classifying them as unfounded and based on fragile evidence. The lawyers say there is no concrete evidence proving the existence of a coup plan and point out that the Federal Police have not found documents that support the PGR allegations.
