Muslim becomes favorite in New York elections on Tuesday
Called by Donald Trump as a “communist lunatic”, Zohran Mamdani becomes a strong competitor in the race for mayor of New York, which takes place next Tuesday (4). The New York election, however, is only attracting attention because the candidate, who was an unknown state representative, ended up attracting attention with posts on TikTok.
Charismatic and with direct and informal language, he won the Democratic Party primaries, defeating the experienced former governor Andrew Cuomo, with 56% of the votes. Now Mamdani has become a topic and a great promise of renewal for Trump’s rival group.
Muslim and avowedly left-wing, he says he wants to be treated the same as any New Yorker. “For too long, we’ve been told to ask for less and be content with the little we get. Enough!”, he said in a podcast interview.
The politician uses the same strategy as Trump, winning over voters with sharp speeches and accurately exploiting social media, according to New York writer Chris Hayes, author of the political book “The Siren’s Song”.
Mamdani’s videos on TikTok, where he has 1.6 million followers, have reached 23.6 million likes. The democratic candidate is a socialist African immigrant, who in irreverent videos and with aesthetic whimsy, defends social issues, as shown in a G1 report.
