PT President confirms Lula candidate for reelection in 2026
PT’s national president, Edinho Silva, confirmed on Friday (25), during the Expert XP 2025that President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will be the candidate for the legend to reelection in 2026. According to him, the candidacy represents the continuity of a project of national reconstruction and strengthening of public policies, in an increasingly adverse international environment.
“That’s it, President Lula is our candidate. The election means continuing a development project with sustainability. Lula assumed tough measures to rebalance the bills and is resuming fundamental programs such as PAC and Minha Casa Minha Vida,” he said.

Tariffs and Sovereignty
The petista leader countered criticism made by the president of the Progressive Union, Antonio Rueda, who had accused Lula not to seek dialogue with the United States about the tariff. Edinho said that the Brazilian government has officially signaled the willingness to negotiate with the White House since May, but recalled that this type of contact requires diplomatic construction.
“It is not the president to take the phone and call. This call must be built, that there is an agenda. Brazil is ready to talk. But without political varnish and without accepting external interference in institutions,” he said. “What can not be transforming a commercial issue under the pretext for interference with Brazilian sovereignty.”
Pix, Brics and Rare Lands
Edinho also criticized the expansion of the conflict agenda with the US, citing topics such as the adhesion of Brazil to the BRICS, the use of Pix and the American interest in national land reserves. He defended Brazil’s right to maintain autonomy on these matters.
“The Pix has become heritage of the Brazilian people. If it is disturbing credit card interests, that this is debated, but with due respect. In the same way, Brazil will defend its natural reserves. We have 25% of the rare lands of the world. This belongs to the Brazilian people,” he said.
“Third World War”
In a more incisive tone, the PT president classified Donald Trump’s stance as a threat to the global economic order. Edinho said that the tariff policy adopted by the Republican already affects several powers – such as China, Russia, Canada, Japan and the European Union – and now also reaches Brazil.
“We are facing an economic war on a global scale. Many economists have said that world war will not be war, it will be economical. And that’s what is drawing,” he said. According to him, the effects of tariffs are as destructive as those of an armed conflict: “They disorganize productive chains, cause unemployment, affect the world economy – including the American.”
“We cannot give up sovereignty. And society is realizing who is next to Brazil and who acts against it,” he concluded.
