Spacex, by Musk, is a favorite to build Trump’s ‘Gold Dome’

Pentagon number two, former private equity-coating Steve Feinberg, will be an important decision maker for the golden dome, two US defense officials said.
Feinberg was co -founder of Cerberus Capital Management, which invested in the state -of -the -art hypersonic missile sector, but not in Spacex. Feinberg, who did not respond to a request for comment, said he would undo all his interests in Cerberus when he entered the government.
Some experts believe that the total cost of the gold dome can reach hundreds of billions of dollars. The Pentagon established several schedules for the structures to be delivered, starting at the beginning of 2026 and ending after 2030.
Spacex is applying for the Gold Dome Initiative called “Custody Layer”, a constellation of satellites that would detect missiles, track their trajectory and determine if they are heading towards the US, according to two sources familiar with Spacex goals.
Spacex estimated that the preliminary work of engineering and project for the satellite custody layer would cost between $ 6 billion and $ 10 billion, two of the sources said. Over the past five years, Spacex has launched hundreds of operational spies and, more recently, several prototypes, which could be adapted to be used in the project, the sources said.
Reuters analyzed an internal memorandum of the Pentagon of the Secretary of Defense, Peter Hegseth, issued shortly before February 28 for the senior leadership of the agency, requesting initial proposals for the Golden Dome and requesting the “acceleration of implementation” of the project.
