TSE anticipates Cármen Lúcia’s succession and accelerates transition to 2026 elections
The president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), minister Cármen Lúcia, announced this Thursday (9) that she will bring forward the election that will mark her departure from command of the Court to April 14th. The vote was originally scheduled for June 3, the last day of his term.
“I decided that, instead of leaving the succession to the Presidency of this Superior Electoral Court until the last day of the mandate, June 3rd, I would start the procedure for electing the new leaders of the House”, stated the minister during the TSE session.

According to Cármen, the change aims to prevent changes in management positions, both in the TSE and in the Regional Electoral Courts (TREs), from occurring too close to the election date, which could compromise the “administrative tranquility” necessary for the transition.
The vote will be symbolic. According to the order agreed between the ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Kassio Nunes Marques and André Mendonça will occupy the two vacancies allocated to members of the STF at the TSE.
The minister also stated that she must agree with Nunes Marques and Mendonça the effective start of the transition and the date of inauguration for the month of May, when her definitive departure from the presidency of the Court should occur.
Appointed by Jair Bolsonaro to the STF, Kassio Nunes Marques is today the vice-president of the TSE and will be responsible, from May, for organizing the 2026 electoral process. The minister is already actively involved in reviewing electoral rules, in a process whose main challenge this year is to contain the possible damage caused by the use of artificial intelligence during the dispute.
In February, Nunes Marques stated that the topic “requires active listening to actors in the electoral process, as well as technology companies, in order to build devices that truly contribute” to the protection of rights.
“This is the time to expand the democratic debate, so that it results in standards capable of ensuring an organized, peaceful electoral process and fully committed to the exercise of citizenship”, said the minister at the opening of the public hearings that debate the standards for the 2026 election.
