2024 elections: 11 capitals elect mayors in the 1st round; 15 will have 2nd round

One out of every three voters in Porto Alegre (RS) did not vote this Sunday in the second round of elections. The abstention rate in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul is the highest among the 15 capitals that defined mayors today (27), at 34.83%. There are 381,965 people eligible to vote who did not go to the polls in the city.

Nunes calls Tarcísio the “greatest leader” and says that “balance overcame extremism”
High abstention rates were a hallmark of this second round of elections. In 12 of the 15 capitals that had municipal elections decided this Sunday, a quarter of voters (25% or more) did not go to the polls. In 6 municipalities, the indicator was above 30%. See details in the table below this text.

TSE will give a quick response to Boulos’ crime news, says Cármen Lúcia

In São Paulo (SP), the abstention rate was 31.54%, which represents 2,940,360 voters – more than the number of votes received by the defeated candidate in the city, Guilherme Boulos. The Psol candidate had 2,323,901 votes.

To total the votes, the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) considers the votes valid, that is, abstentions and blank votes or votes canceled in the ballot box do not count.

The capital of São Paulo also stood out for its rate of invalid votes, when a person goes to the ballot box and inserts a number into it that does not belong to any candidate or political party. The error may be intentional or unintentional. There were 6.75% invalid votes in São Paulo, which is equivalent to 430,756 voters.
