When does the conclave start? Learn the next steps for the Pope’s choice
Preparation for the conclave. Cardinals must ensure that Santa Marta’s house is properly prepared to host the cardinals voters. At the same time, the sistine chapel must be organized for the election.
Voting takes place in the sistine chapel. Cardinals are prohibited from any kind of communication with the outside during the conclave and take a silence oath.
To be elected Pope, it takes at least two thirds of the votes. Cardinals have no right to abstain or to vote for themselves.
There is no specific deadline for the conclave. According to the BBC, one of the greatest elections in history was that of Pope Gregory 10th, in 1268. At the time, the Pope’s choice lasted almost three years. In modern history, the conclaves no longer demand so much time. Pope Francis’ election, for example, lasted two days.
Three cardinals are chosen to count the votes. The color of the smoke that will come out of the chimney announces to the world the result. Black, if there is no decision, and white, if a new Pope has been elected.
