Ukraine proposes helps to countries with blackout: ‘experience after Russian attacks’
Air company reported problems at airports. Air traffic controllers said traffic was affected and planes “disappeared” on European routes after disconnecting from the network.
Telecommunications problems. Telephone networks were affected, with messaging services and calls operating at half the speed.
Six hours after the start of chaos, only a few regions of Portugal and Spain had the energy services resumed. Affected to a lesser extent, France has resumed the supply of electricity faster.
Luís Montenegro, Portuguese Prime Minister, asked for patience and said the light returns “in the next few hours”. At a press conference, João Faria Conceição, manager of REN (National Energy Networks), said he has no information about the origin of the blackout. However, the Portugal company stated that the problem originated “imbalances” in a high voltage distribution network in Spain.
Ren hopes to resume electricity between two and six hours. In Porto, according to the company, the supply should be resumed within two hours. For Greater Lisbon, the resumption of supply should happen in six hours. Operators say electric supply may take up to 10 hours to standardize throughout the country, but Conceição said the national system should be normalized later tonight.
Spain did not give time to the resumption. Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez said the country is working to accelerate energy supply, but did not talk about deadlines. According to the authority, the causes for the blackout are still being studied – avoiding assigning culprits to the problem.
