Walmart says Trump fares are increasing company costs
The impact of tariffs has been gradual enough for any customer behavioral adjustments to have been mitigated, but as we rely on posttarafish price levels, we will continue to see our costs increase each week, which we expect to continue in the third and fourth quarter Doug McMillon, CEO of Walmart, to analysts while reporting results from the second quarter
Walmart’s CEO said consumers of average and low income have been more sensitive to price increases related to tariffs. “We see a corresponding moderation in the units by item as customers change to other items or, in some cases, categories,” he said.
Donald Trump’s response. Walmart had already warned in May that it would need to increase some prices due to tariffs, even with its size and scale. The company’s comments attracted criticism from President Donald Trump: “Between Walmart and China, they should, as they say, ‘eat the tariffs’, and not charge anything valuable customers. I will be watching, like their customers!”
In an interview with CNBC, CEO John David Rainey said the company is working hard to keep prices lowincluding accelerating imports from abroad and keeping discounts for a limited time in your stores. “This is managed item by item and category by category. There are certainly areas where we totally absorbed the impact of the highest costs of tariffs. In other areas, we had to pass some of these costs,” he said.
Walmart’s chief financial officer refused to specify items or categories where Walmart increased pricessaying that the company is “trying to keep prices as low as possible”. According to CNBC analysis of about 50 items sold by the retailer, some of the price changes have already reached the shelves in items such as frying pan, jeans and car seats.
