Trump plans to send national guard to Chicago, says newspaper
It would also complement the expanded offensive of the Customs Immigration and Control Service (ICE) that aims undocumented migrants.
Illinois governor JB Pritzker and Chicago mayor Brandon Johnson, both democrats, rejected the idea.
“Donald Trump and the Republicans Maga (acronym of his Make America Great Again movement, NDLR) are trying to paint his party as one of ‘law and order’,” Pritzker published on social network. “That could not be further from the truth.”
Pritzker said in statements collected by WBEZ Chicago that “public safety is under attack by the Trump administration.”
Johnson stated that the city did not receive any formal communication from the government about military shipments, and classified a potential action of this type as “unnecessary, unnecessary and irrational.”
Chicago registered 573 homicides in 2024, according to the city’s police, 8% less than the previous year.
