38% of Americans support Trump troops in Washington
The division broadly reflects the party contours of Trump’s general popularity, with 40% of respondents in the survey saying that they approve their performance in the White House, staying at the lowest level of their current government for three consecutive polls since late July.
Trump’s popularity has decreased since his return to power in January, when 47% of Americans gave him a “thumb up.” The Republican has the overwhelming support of his party members and does not have the overwhelming support of the Democrats. About two thirds of the independents disapprove it.
He has been aggressively seeking his agenda to his second term, ordering an unauthorized immigration repression and a series of commercial wars with other nations, while directing the federal judiciary against his political opponents.
Earlier this month, Trump ordered National Guard troops to help police Washington, where the Democratic Party dominates local politics, and threatened to do the same in other major cities run by Democrats. The measure, which also included federal control of policing in the capital, follows years of criticism from Trump that democrats are mild to crime.
Only 36% of respondents in the Reuters/IPSOS survey, including 8% of Democrats and 71% of Republicans, said they supported federal authorities to put local police from the capital under federal control.
Hundreds of unarmed national guard soldiers have been on the streets of Washington in the last two weeks after Trump has declared a criminal emergency in the district. Last week, the Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, authorized the troops to carry guns.
