Fux vote reverberates in the international press: ‘breaking with colleagues’
By rejecting Jair Bolsonaro’s coup or abolition participation hypothesis, the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Minister Luiz Fux said there was no evidence of the former president’s participation on January 8, disqualified his repeated attacks on the electoral process and the ballot box and pointed out what would be weaknesses of material evidence. On Wednesday, the magistrate opened divergence in the first class and acquitted Bolsonaro in a “marathon vote” that repercussions even abroad. International press vehicles pointed out that Fux “broke” with their STF colleagues.
Reuters pointed out that Fux “broke” with its peers, gave strength to arguments of the defense that the trial should be in the court plenary and increased “the chances of an appeal of the sentence.” The news agency considered that a Bolsonaro conviction still seems likely to be resumed in the case, to be resumed on Thursday with the vote of Minister Cármen Lúcia, but said that a possible long process of resources “would approach the procedures of the 2026 presidential campaign.”

“The divergence in the court increases tension in a case that has already polarized the country and has taken thousands of Bolsonaro supporters to the streets in protest,” reuters wrote, in reference to September 7 acts from the country.
Reuters also pointed out that Fux was appointed to the Supreme Court by former President Dilma Rousseff, allied and successor of Lula-against whom, according to the prosecution, Bolsonaro and accomplices plotted a blow.
Al Jazeera also stressed that Fux “broke with his colleagues.” The channel highlighted Fux’s manifestation of “absolute incompetence” of the First Class of the Supreme Court to judge the case, which, according to him, should have been appreciated by lower instances by Bolsonaro to have left the presidency. It also highlighted the claim that the defense did not have enough time to analyze so much material from the accusation that the magistrate called “data tsunami.” The station said the court still seems “prone” to condemn Bolsonaro.
“But it is unlikely that the little victory lasts a lot, as the remaining two judges must make culprit verdicts,” he wrote, noting that seven other defendants face similar sentences.
