MOTTA TRACK PROJECT THAT MAKES CRIME HEDORY TO DRINK ADD
The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB), announced on Wednesday (1st) that the plenary will vote in urgent regime the bill 2,307/2007, which makes a heinous crime the adulteration of food and beverages.
The decision occurs amid the escalating cases of methanol poisoning in Sao Paulo, which have already resulted in six confirmed deaths or under investigation.
The project has been in Congress for over 15 years, but gained priority after the recent public health crisis. According to Motta, the measure is necessary to “firmly respond to criminal practices that endanger the life of the population.”

The PL foresees more severe penalties for those who falsify, corrupt or tamper with food and beverages, framing these crimes in the category of heinous, which makes criminal benefits such as pardon and parole difficult.
The case of São Paulo
On Tuesday (30), a 49-year-old man died at home in São Bernardo do Campo, in ABC Paulista, on suspicion of methanol poisoning. It was the fourth death recorded in the municipality and Friday throughout the state possibly linked to the consumption of adulterated alcohol.
According to data from the State Department of Health, there are at least 22 notifications of cases of poisoning, seven confirmed and 15 still under analysis. All deaths so far are from men, aged 38 to 58 years.
Local authorities blocked bars and cellars suspected of marketing adulterated drinks and seized hundreds of bottles without label or proof of origin. The São Paulo government created a crisis office and determined the precautionary closure of establishments until the investigation is completed.
