Lula will listen to Alcolumbre about the STF nominee and makes a gesture to magistrates
After listening to the ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) about the succession of Luis Roberto Barroso’s vacancy, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva should talk to the president of the Senate Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP). The decision on choosing the nomination will be centralized by Lula regardless of these conversations, say assistants. These allies argue that the president does not give up his prerogative to nominate a name he trusts.
Despite the preference in the Senate and a wing of the Supreme Court for Senator Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), the presidential environment sees the Minister of General Advocacy of the Union, Jorge Messias, as the favorite.

Ministers Gilmar Mendes, Flávio Dino, Cristiano Zanin and Alexandre de Moraes were present, as well as members of the government’s top echelon, Ricardo Lewandowski (Justice) and Rui Costa (Casa Civil).
As O GLOBO showed, STF ministers took advantage of the occasion to convey the expectation that the choice would be “weighty” — someone capable of preserving the institutional authority of the court.
Lula, in turn, reinforced that he is still reflecting and that he will make a “good choice”.
The bet among the PT’s allies is that by talking to Davi Alcolumbre, Lula will have already made the decision and will take his name to the president of the Senate as a fait accompli. Lula, however, needs the support of Alcolumbre, who advocates for Pacheco’s nomination, so that the House can approve the name of his nominee.
The one chosen by Lula needs to be slaughtered by the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) of the Senate and have the name approved by the main plenary of the House. At least 41 votes are needed for approval.
