After leaving PDT, Ciro Gomes is confirmed in the PSDB and targets the government of Ceará
After confirming his departure from the PDT on Friday night (17), former governor of Ceará Ciro Gomes was confirmed in the PSDB, the party for which he had already been elected at the beginning of his political career. The affiliation was announced by the party’s state president, Ozires Pontes, in a video released on social media on Friday night.
On Friday, Ciro delivered a letter of disaffiliation to the PDT, a party he had been part of since 2015. The rupture occurred after the party declared support for the government of PT member Elmano de Freitas, a movement with which Ciro said he disagreed. According to allies, Ciro’s stay in the party was already considered unsustainable, mainly due to demonstrations against the rapprochement with the PT in the state.

The Tasso Jereissati factor
Ciro returns to the PSDB, the party that promoted him in the 90s, when he was elected governor of Ceará. Ozires Pontes attributed the convincing to former senator Tasso Jereissati, a historic figure of the PSDB in the state. “He convinced Ciro to make this choice that the PSDB was the right party”, stated Ozires.
The party should hold an event to celebrate Ciro’s membership on Wednesday (22), at 9:30 am, at the Hotel Mareiro, on Avenida Beira Mar, in Fortaleza.
“Let’s welcome our former governor and future governor of Ceará, Ciro Ferreira Gomes, with a round of applause and a very warm hug”, stated Ozires Pontes. Ciro governed the state between 1991 and 1994.
Ciro Gomes’ plans for 2026
With the affiliation confirmed, the party is already working on the hypothesis that Ciro will be the PSDB candidate for the government of Ceará in the 2026 elections. “In a few days or a few months, Ciro himself will be announcing his candidacy for the government of Ceará”, declared Ozires.
Ciro has already run for Presidency of the Republic on four occasions, always with great national visibility, but without managing to reach the second round. His first attempt was in 1998, for PPS, when he finished in third place. In 2002, again by PPS, it came in fourth place. In 2018, with the PDT, it experienced its best electoral moment: it obtained 12.4% of the votes, guaranteeing third place. However, in 2022, also by PDT, it had its worst performance, with only 3% of valid votes, placing fourth.
So far, Ciro Gomes has not commented.
