After controversy, Lula meets with German and invites him to visit Brazil

Days after criticizing Belém and starting a controversy even in his country, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz met with President Lula. The Brazilian invited him to make a new visit to Brazil. The meeting took place this Saturday, on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Merz had caused outrage by stating that he and his delegation were relieved and happy to have left Belém, host of the UN Climate Conference. His diplomacy was quick to stifle criticism, praised Brazil and announced the donation of resources to Lula’s initiatives against deforestation. But the chancellor did not apologize and only indicated that he did not have time to learn more about the place.

In a statement, the Brazilian government indicated that it was Merz who requested the meeting with Lula. The president “confirmed his trip to Hannover, in April next year, to participate in the opening of the largest industrial technology fair in the world, which will have Brazil as a partner country.”
