Edinho Silva says Haddad will be a candidate for “whatever he wants” in elections
The president of the Workers’ Party, Edinho Silva, stated on Thursday (5) that the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad (PT), will be able to run for the position he wants in the 2026 elections, but defended that the politician dialogue with the party to define his role in the dispute.
“Haddad can be a candidate for whatever he wants. There is no pressure on this, there is no reason to put pressure on Haddad. What exists is the need for dialogue to understand the responsibility and role he can play in the electoral process”, he stated during an event marking the party’s 46th anniversary.
The ‘defense’ of the minister comes amid growing pressure for Haddad to fulfill an electoral role in São Paulo — a mission assigned by Lula, but formally refused several times in statements by the minister, who prefers to work directly in the president’s campaign.

During the event marking the party’s anniversary, Lula reiterated the demand, saying that Geraldo Alckmin and Fernando Haddad know that they will have a role to play in this year’s electoral dispute in the state. “We have the conditions to win in São Paulo. I haven’t yet spoken to Haddad (Fernando, Minister of Finance), I haven’t spoken to Alckmin (Geraldo, vice-president), but they know that they have a role to play in São Paulo”, said the president in an interview with the UOL portal.
On Wednesday (4), the Minister of Planning, Simone Tebet, publicly demanded Haddad’s entry into the dispute in São Paulo. “There’s no way for Minister Haddad to escape this mission. It’s not possible. The picture won’t close without him. And he needs to have this awareness and I think he does”, he declared to journalists upon leaving an event at Palácio do Planalto.
One day earlier, on Tuesday (3), Haddad reinforced that he does not intend to run for elected office in 2026 and stated that his focus is on coordinating Lula’s re-election campaign. In an interview with BandNews FMthe minister said he did not see himself as a candidate for either the government or the Senate for São Paulo, despite this being a desire expressed by Lula. “Let’s see who convinces who,” he said.
