Even without awards at the Oscars, Lula exalts the strength of Brazilian cinema
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) spoke, in the early hours of this Monday (16), about Brazilian cinema after the defeat of The Secret Agent and Train Dreams at the 2026 Oscars.
In a post on social media, Lula highlighted that, despite the defeat in the five nominated categories, millions of Brazilians “are proud to see” Brazilian artists at the ceremony.
“There were five nominations for the biggest award in world cinema, showing the strength of our cinema and the talent of our actors, actresses, directors and the entire technical team that makes this art happen. It is Brazil bringing the power of our culture and our stories to the world”, he highlighted.

Brazil competed in five different categories. The Secret Agent competed for Best Film, Best International Film, Best Actor and Best Casting Direction, while Train Dreams competed in the Best Photography category.
In the publication, Lula also highlighted that the country’s participation in the ceremony increases the visibility of Brazilian culture and helps boost national productions in the international market.
At the end of the publication, the president congratulated the artists and professionals involved in the productions nominated for the award, with a special mention for directors Kleber Mendonça and Adolpho Veloso. “We are very proud of all of you and our cinema”, concluded Lula.
