Alckmin says the government will not ‘force anyone’ to accept a reduction in diesel
Vice President Geraldo Alckmin stated this Saturday that the federal government will not “force anyone” to accept the measure of subsidizing imported diesel, after the states postponed the decision on whether they will adhere to the proposal presented by the Executive.
This week, the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva government proposed that the states share the costs to establish a subsidy for imported diesel of R$1.20 per liter of fuel, with each entity responsible for R$0.60 per liter, in an attempt to mitigate the impacts on prices resulting from the war in the Middle East. This Friday, state secretaries met with the executive secretary of Finance, Rogério Ceron, to discuss the topic, but there was no consensus.
The forecast is that a new meeting will take place on Monday to confirm whether the states will unanimously accept the proposal.

Ceron: Response from states on imported diesel subsidy will be given by Monday
Executive Secretary of Finance said that the group of States resistant to the idea understood the proposal and should respond after evaluating the governors
— The government will not force anyone. The federal government did its part and has a good understanding with the states. A good understanding,” the vice president told reporters after visiting a dealership this Saturday.
Alckmin also stated that the proposal to share the costs with the states is “transitory”, lasting 60 days, but did not rule out that this could be extended if the war is not ended within that period.
He said that there is action by the federal government to “avoid the impact of war on people’s lives” and spoke of the impact on inflation — an issue that worries the government, especially in an election year. He rejected, however, that these measures are being presented because of the election.
—It has nothing to do with the election. The oil issue is with war. We do not have the power to end the war and it has consequences throughout the world, the price of a barrel of oil has risen, this has an impact on the economy and inflation. What did the government correctly do? It zeroed the tax on diesel and, in addition, gave a subsidy to try to hold back the price increase, because this has an impact on inflation. (The government) appealed to the states not to remove the tax, but to have this subsidy,” said the vice president.
