Caiado responds to Lula’s talk about pets and family debt and blames corruption
The statement by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) about the impact of spending on pets on family budgets provoked a reaction from the governor of Goiás, Ronaldo Caiado (PSD), who associated the debt with structural problems in the economy and corruption.
In a video published on social media on Friday (27), Caiado directly criticized the president’s speech. “Lula, now you want to tell me that people’s level of debt is a result of the fact that they keep a dog at home? (…) It’s not the dogs, no. It’s exactly the corrupt ones,” he stated.

The response comes after Lula’s speech in Anápolis (GO), on Thursday (26), when the president mentioned the increase in spending on pets over the years. According to him, care such as food, hygiene and veterinary care began to weigh more heavily on families’ budgets. “It’s a kidnapping of our salary,” he said.
During his speech, Lula cited examples of expenses for domestic animals, such as consultations and care products, to illustrate changes in consumption patterns. The president also commented, in a generic way, on habits in other countries when addressing the topic.
Caiado’s criticism inserts the discussion into a broader political debate. The governor, who is a pre-candidate for President, has adopted a harsher tone against the federal government and sought to associate the economic deterioration with management failures.
