Messias goes online to thank allied senators, after criticism of the base’s performance
The head of the Federal Attorney General’s Office, Jorge Messias, thanked senators Otto Alencar (PSD-BA) and Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), leader of the Lula government in the Senate, after criticism of the base’s performance and accusations of betrayal in the government base in the vote that rejected the minister’s nomination for a vacancy on the Federal Supreme Court (STF).
In a post on social media this Friday, Messias called the two senators “friends” and thanked them “deeply” for their work and for supporting him “unconditionally throughout this process”.
“Jesus Christ taught us the value of gratitude. I deeply thank my friends @jaqueswagner and @ottoalencar, and the 32 senators who supported me unconditionally throughout this process. May God bless them greatly and multiply in blessings all the affection dedicated to me”, wrote Messias.

Messias’ defeat in the Senate plenary was orchestrated by the president of the House, Davi Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP), who was upset with the appointment of the head of the Federal Attorney General’s Office and started working against the minister. The president of the Senate denies having worked against it.
In the assessment of Palácio do Planalto, the articulation for defeat also involved betrayals from allies, identified by government supporters as members of the MDB, PP and PSD, in addition to suspicions of the actions of Rodrigo Pacheco (PSB-MG), Alcolumbre’s favorite candidate.
Accusations
Messias’ position this Friday comes after government supporters began accusing parliamentarians from the allied base of having betrayed the Planalto Palace and voting against the minister in the vote in the Senate. Otto is president of the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) of the Senate, where Messias was questioned, and exercises influence on the PSD bench.
In the case of Wagner, in addition to criticism of the senator’s political articulation – who had, in the afternoon, stated to the President of the Republic that the situation was favorable – his behavior at the time of the vote in plenary generated annoyance among government supporters.
They criticized the government leader’s friendly tone with Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), Lula’s opponent in the elections, in the plenary moments before the vote score was revealed, and the hug he gave in Alcolumbre after the defeat was confirmed.
In a historic defeat for the government, the nomination was rejected by senators on Wednesday by 42 votes to 34. According to GLOBO columnist Malu Gaspar, Messias warned President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva that he was considering leaving command of the AGU after the rejection.
On Thursday, the minister also took to social media to thank the support he received from STF ministers André Mendonça and Gilmar Mendes.
