Abortion is the biggest concern for young women deciding to vote in the USA
Most women participated in a previous phase of the same survey, carried out in May and June. The margin of error is five points, with greater variations for subgroups of voters.
Around 66% of women said the elections will have a major impact on access to abortion. Most women said Republican Trump is likely to sign a federal law banning abortions after the first 15 weeks of pregnancy if Congress approves such a measure. Female voters said they believed Harris would sign a law protecting abortion access nationwide if Congress passed it.
There is a deep partisan divide over which candidate would be better on abortion access. An overwhelming majority of Democratic women say they trust Harris over Trump to decide policy on each of the issues: access to abortion (90% vs. 4%), access to birth control (92% vs. 4%), and access to in vitro fertilization (88% vs. 5%). About six-in-ten Republican women say they trust Trump over Harris on the issue of access to abortion (65% vs. 17%), access to birth control (57% vs. 21%), and access to IVF vitro (64% vs. 14%). However, about one in five or more Republican women say they do not trust any of the candidates in each of these areas.
Female Democratic voters are also becoming more comfortable with Harris talking about abortion policy. In June, half (49%) of Democratic voters said they had “a lot” of trust in her to talk about abortion policy. The percentage increased to three out of four in the latest survey. The most notable increase is among Democratic women of reproductive age.
US Supreme Court reverses historic abortion ruling. In 2022, the US Supreme Court, with a conservative majority, left the possibility of locally legislating on abortion rights in the hands of states, which became one of the big issues at rallies ahead of the November 5 presidential elections. After the Supreme Court ruling, around 20 of the country’s 50 states restricted the right to abortion, a practice that became a key issue for November’s presidential elections.
