Uruguaiana City Hall (RS) is the victim of hackers, who demand R$60 thousand in cryptos

The City Hall of Uruguaiana (RS), a city 623 kilometers from Porto Algre, announced that it was the victim of a hacker attack last Monday (25).

Cybercriminals hijacked the local files of all municipal departments, encrypting the data and demanding a ransom of US$10,000 in digital currencies, equivalent to approximately R$60,000 at the current exchange rate.

The city hall looked for companies specializing in encryption to help recover the data, but, so far, there has been no success due to the complexity of the attack.

Despite the hijacking of local files, the city hall reported that there were no losses in other systems, such as employee payroll, invoice issuance and payments to creditors. This means that the essential operations of the municipal administration continue to function normally.

The attack on Uruguaiana City Hall is another in a series of cyberattacks on public bodies in Brazil. In 2024, other city halls, such as Porto Alegre and Rio de Janeiro, were also targets of similar actions.
