US deportations reach highest number in a decade
The report, which brings together statistics from October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2024, is released a month before the inauguration of Donald Trump, who made anti-immigration rhetoric the focus of his campaign, and incessantly attacked the government of Democrat Joe Biden, whom he classified as negligent on border issues.
However, official data shows that, in fiscal year 2024, the number of deportations was higher than in any of the four years of the first Trump administration.
The Republican promised to begin mass deportation actions from January 20, when he will take command of the White House, and designated personalities known for their strong anti-immigration positions to carry out the task.
Between 11 and 15 million immigrants live in the United States without the necessary documentation, according to estimates.
Many of them are crucial in agriculture, construction and the restaurant and hotel sector, where they make up the bulk of the workforce.
Without arguments, Trump and his team brand immigrants as criminals. Many of them arrive in the United States from countries in crisis, such as Venezuela, Haiti, Nicaragua and Cuba, and are accused of stealing American jobs.
