Carter wanted to spend his last days at home and received palliative care
Jimmy Carter decided today to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive palliative care instead of further medical interventions
Statement published by the Carter Center
Carter announced metastatic skin cancer in 2015. He was diagnosed with aggressive melanoma in August 2015, with outbreaks of the disease in his liver and brain. In December of the same year, Carter stated that he no longer had cancer detected in the exams, after an experimental treatment.
Brain operation in 2019. Jimmy Carter underwent surgery to drain a subdural hematoma, a hemorrhage between the brain and skull — just like President Lula had earlier this month. Frequent falls at home would have caused the problem, the press said at the time.
First former US president to turn 100 years old. Jimmy Carter celebrated the date almost three months ago, on October 1st of this year. Shortly before, one of his grandchildren stated that he was conscious and “excited” to vote for Kamala Harris, defeated by Donald Trump in the US presidential election in November.
Wife died in 2023. Rosalynn Carter, married to Jimmy for 77 years, died in November last year at age 96. She had dementia and was unable to recover from a urinary tract infection due to poor health.
Rosalynn was my companion in everything I achieved. She gave me guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew someone loved and supported me
