Ocean level rises above the expected
Sea level rose 0.59 centimeters last year, more than the 0.43 previously planned by scientists, according to a NASA measurement released yesterday.
“The pace of this increase is faster and faster,” said Josh Willis, one of NASA researchers.
According to the agency, two thirds of the elevation were caused by the expansion of ocean water volume by increasing temperature.
The rest is mainly due to the melting of the ice layer. The proportion is reverse to that of previous years, when the melting of glaciers and polar hubcaps was the main cause.
The year 2024 has been the hottest ever recorded since the beginning of the measurements in 1850. In the last 30 years, from 1993 to 2023, the average sea level increased by 10 centimeters.
