Lula asks Zé Dirceu to apply for federal deputy in the 2026 elections
Former Civil House Minister José Dirceu, who turns 79 on Sunday, 16, said he was summoned by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to be a candidate for federal deputy in the 2026 electoral dispute.
Dirceu’s statement took place on Saturday, 15, during a press conference at the ELZA SOARES Cultural Galpão (MST Campo Warehouse) in the Elyseos fields, central São Paulo, where it celebrates its birthday with supporters and militants of the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST).
“And also that I studied the possibility of being a federal deputy, which I will do at the end of the year. Dirceu was a federal deputy between 1999 and 2005 (won the 1998 and 2002 elections), but was revoked in 2005 in the monthly scandal, when it was found that corporate fundraisters were made through donations to the PT to gain political support. The former minister was appointed as one of the leaders of the criminal movement.
He was arrested in 2013 after being convicted by the Supreme Court (STF) to 7 years and 11 months in prison (he served 354 days in jail and was entitled to serve the rest of the sentence at home).
Years later, he was arrested three times during Operation Lava Jato, when he was sentenced by then Judge Sérgio Moro to 23 years in prison. Later, the former minister saw the actions against him to be nullified by the STF in the wake of the movement that led to the review of other convictions, such as Lula’s.
Dirceu paid MST R $ 10 per dish of feijoada served in party
The former minister banned the lunch served at the party with the contribution of $ 10 to MST for each dish. At least a thousand people were expected at the event, which would yield R $ 10,000 disbursed by the petista.
