Lewandowski praises police and says he talks about ‘arresting bad’ was taken from context

New Security PEC brings Susp, 'new police' and care with state autonomy

After being criticized for saying that the “police arrest badly”, the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Ricardo Lewandowski, corrected on Friday, 21, and praised the institution.

The minister traveled to João Pessoa to inaugurate the first unit of Sala Lilac, a space for the care of women and girls in situations of gender violence. At the time, he took the opportunity to try to fix the controversy made two days earlier.

“I want to emphasize now, publicly, that we have a highly efficient and prepared Brazilian police. My expression has been pinned out of context, that the police have to be better paid, better equipped, need to be better informed so that they can arrest so that there is no such phenomenon of the judiciary eventually having to correct arrests that were not made according to the law,” he said.

During the opening of the meeting of the Deliberative Council of the Confederation of Trade and Business Associations of Brazil (CACB), in Brasilia, Lewandowski had declared that the judiciary is forced to release detainees who had their arrests conducted wrongly by the police, and that “the police have to arrest better.”

“It is a jargon that was adopted by the population, that the police arrest and the judiciary loose. I will say the following: the police arrest badly and the judiciary is forced to release,” he said at the time.

The statement reverberated badly between police associations and the opposition to the Lula administration, and the folder acted to soften speech. In a statement, the ministry reported that “the demonstration occurred in a context of the lack of integration of police information and custody hearings.”

“In this scenario, he said that today there is a difficulty in exchanging information between the security forces of the country and the judiciary, which is intended to solve from the PEC of public security -which is one of the objectives is to standardize and standardize the data produced by police authorities throughout Brazil, qualifying public security actions,” says the note.

“In the minister’s response, it was mentioned that, in many cases, the detainee is presented to the judge at the custody hearing, but, for lack of standardization and sharing in the registration of information, the magistrate does not have access to important data, such as the suspect’s background.”

“It is noteworthy that the minister began his demonstration on the subject extolling the need to value the police, including better salaries, and to better equip the police forces to, among other points, qualify the entire probative process and roar legal proceedings,” he concludes.

The negative repercussion against Lewandowski was diverse. Prosecutor Alexandre Daruge, from São Paulo, replied that the police arrest little and that there are “reckless” freedom concessions by the judges. The former São Paulo police general, Marcos Carneiro, said the minister sinned for “generalizing” the situation.

The governors of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (PSDB), and Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (Novo), criticized the speech. And leaders from six police organizations invited Lewandowski to visit a mausoleum from the dead in service “to reflect.”
