‘Liberation Day’: Trump today announces tariffs to countries and products
Tomorrow, vehicle import fee should start to be in force. When Trump announced the measure, two weeks ago, the idea was that the 25% surcharge on importing foreign vehicles started with the other tariffs, but the White House confirmed that this will only happen on Thursday, 1h01 (Brasília time).
Since returning to the White House, Donald Trump has increased the import rates of products from China, some from Mexico and Canada. The main measure that affected Brazil was the taxation of steel and aluminum, by 25% – not only for national products, but for the whole world.
Brazilian government sees “strong evidence of taxation,” and prepares response. Brazil can increase import rates of various products by up to 35% without breaking the World Trade Organization (WTO) commercial agreements. Other countries think of alternatives.
Will countries or products be charged?
The US government is speculated to tax products, not countries. Although the possibility of taxing each country individually was considered, according to the Washington Post newspaper, there is a consensus that taxing products is “more logical”.
Canada, Mexico and China are the “favorite targets”. In addition to some rates that affect other countries, the US government has already taxed in 10% electricity imported from Canada, and all China products by 20%.
