Bogota Court ordered his release on Monday (31). The release occurred because the warrants were already prescribed. Upon arrival in Colombia, police arrested Lehder based on a 1995 conviction related to the illegal possession of narcotics, weapons and ammunition. Two days later, the court determined that the 24 -year sentence had already prescribed and ordered its immediate release.

Who is Carlos Lehder‘El Loco’

Created in boarding schools in Colombia, Lehder moved to the US in the 1970s, where he was arrested. He lived with relatives in New York and became involved in theft and smuggling of vehicles, which led him to arrest in the state of Connecticut.

His definitive entry into the traffic world occurred after his release in 1975. According to BBC report, Lehder began with marijuana, but soon migrated to cocaine, which would become the center of his criminal empire.

Knowledge about logistics and aerial routes caught the attention of Pablo Escobar. He became an ally of Escobar to strengthen the still emerging cartel of Medellin. Lehder was a key piece in the insertion of Colombian cocaine in the lucrative US market.
