Datafolha: 52% of Brazilians advocate Bolsonaro’s arrest for coup attempt
A Datafolha survey released on Tuesday (8) by the newspaper S.Paulo Folha It shows that 52% of Brazilians believe that former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) should be arrested for leading an attempted coup d’état in 2022. Although the majority defended the prison, the same percentage-52%-does not believe he will indeed be arrested.
The survey was done days after the Federal Supreme Court (STF) made Bolsonaro defendant, with seven other allies, for attempted coup. On March 26, the 1st class of the STF unanimously accepted the complaint filed by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), starting a criminal action that can lead to penalties of up to 43 years in prison.

Regional and religious divisions
The scenario is a technical draw in the North/Midwest regions (47% in favor of prison, 45% against) and south (49% against prison, 46% in favor).
Among Catholics, 55% advocate Bolsonaro’s arrest, while 39% are opposed. Already among evangelicals, the scenario is reversed: 54% are against the arrest of the former president and only 38% support it.
The data stress that, although there is a majority favorable to Bolsonaro’s criminal liability, skepticism as to the effectiveness of justice remains high, reflecting the uncertainties of the Brazilian political scenario.
The survey was conducted between April 1st and 3rd, with 3,054 interviews in 172 municipalities. The margin of error is two percentage points for more or less.
