Trump claimed that he made his decision for the difference in the contributions of Washington and Beijing, and accused WHO that he was “frauduming” his country.

The US was by far the largest donor of WHO. In the latest Biannual budget cycle of 2022-2023, Washington contributed up to $ 1.3 billion (7.49 billion reais), which represented 16.3% of the total budget, which was $ 7.89 billion (45.4 billion reais).

“The announcement of the United States, combined with recent reductions in public aid to the development of some countries to finance the increase in defense spending, has made our situation much more critical,” Tedros said.

In February, the WHO Executive Council reduced the proposed budget to 2026-2027, from $ 5.3 billion (30.5 billion reais) to 4.9 billion (28.25 billion reais).

“Since then, development prospects have deteriorated,” Tedros recalled, so it has been decided to propose “the Member States an even lower budget of $ 4.2 billion (24.21 billion reais),” he explained, “a 21% drop from the initially proposed budget,” he explained.

Most of the American financing came from voluntary contributions to specific projects, rather than a fixed participation.
