Carmen Lúcia defends Moraes’ decision on X and criticizes Musk: “owner of the algorithm”
The minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Cármen Lúcia, defended decisions that suspended the social network X (formerly Twitter) in Brazil. Participating in the program “Roda Viva”, on TV Cultura, on Monday night (30), she criticized Elon Musk without quoting him directly, stating that “the owner of the algorithm (Musk) cannot imagine that he is the only one who has a free expression”.
The minister also took responsibility for the decision, most popularly attributed only to minister Alexandre de Moraes, reinforcing that it was endorsed by the First Panel in plenary. “We did it,” he said. The decision was also defended as a guarantee of compliance with the rule of law in Brazil. “Brazil needed to enforce it, through the judge State, because the decision was a court order, and it enforced it.”
Carmen Lúcia also stated that “Brazil is no one’s backyard” and that any company that wants to operate in the country must follow national rules. “Why would it be any different for us? Why does a company think it can treat Brazil as if it were something that can be absolutely disdained?” he asked.
The platform remains suspended in Brazil, after Alexandre de Moraes denied unblocking it on Friday (27). The return of the social network is conditional on the payment of a fine of R$10 million for temporary non-compliance with the decision that suspended the platform.
