Deputy Renato Freitas breaks his nose after exchanging kicks and punches in Curitiba

Paraná state deputy Renato Freitas (PT) was caught on videos exchanging physical attacks with a man on the street in the center of Curitiba, on the morning of this Wednesday, 19th.

The images of the fight, which are circulating on social media, show the deputy arguing with the man on a sidewalk on Rua Vicente Machado. Freitas is accompanied by another boy, who quickly gets involved in the fight.

“Leave me, leave me”, says the deputy to the boy accompanying him. “So come on, handsome. Come on, handsome,” he says when addressing the man he was fighting with. Afterwards, Renato lands two kicks on the man and then gets punched in the face.

The man left the deputy bleeding. “Come on, ‘piazão’. Are you bleeding already? Are you bleeding already?”, he mocks. Freitas responds: “So it started. If I’m bleeding, it started”, says the deputy. Renato is also called “PSOL councilor” and asked by the man: “Aren’t you the famous one?”

In another video, the two appear exchanging aggression on a pedestrian crossing. The fight ends on the other side of the street, after the deputy gives the man a rear-naked choke and they are separated by people passing by.

Estadão contacted the Civil and Military Police of Paraná and is awaiting their response. Until the publication of this report, the man who fought with the deputy had not been identified.

Breach of decorum

In a note, the Legislative Assembly of Paraná (Alep) reported early this Wednesday afternoon that it had received four representations for breach of parliamentary decorum against deputy Renato Freitas.

“The cases will be forwarded to the Ethics Council, the competent body to assess responsibility and judge the deputy’s conduct,” stated Alep. Freitas is one of the board members.

Estadão found that at least one representation against the deputy came from a Curitiba councilor and that the others were signed by parliamentarians.

Controversial history

Renato Freitas accumulates episodes of confrontations with politicians and also with members of the security forces. In 2021, when he was a councilor in Curitiba, he was arrested twice. One for disobedience and resistance and the other for suspicion of aggression. In 2022, Freitas had his mandate revoked.

In Alep, he was punished by the Board of Directors after being accused of having facilitated the entry of protesters into the Alep building, in 2024.
