Between 2000 and 2009, Peña was an employee of the Central Bank. In 2012, he joined the direction of the institution and, in 2014, was appointed Finance Minister by Cartes, which made him join the Colorado Party. The caption has dominated Paraguay’s political life since the nineteenth century.

To attack him, his opponents refer to him as a “secretary of cards,” which seems not to affect him. “It’s someone very serene, it impresses your tranquility,” one of his advisers told AFP.

Traditional family

Son of economist José María Peña and Argentina Ana María Palacios, the new president is the youngest of three brothers. She is married to Leticia Ocampos, with whom she had her first child, Gonzalo, before turning 18. The couple also have a daughter, Costanza, 16.

Conservatism in customs. It is against abortion for considering it a “shortcut” and also rejects same-sex marriage.

The Paraguayan President is also against neutral language. Shortly before the election, he supported the congress rejection of a 38 million euros donation (about R $ 234 million) to an educational project for using language.
