Floods in Asia leave more than 900 dead and hundreds missing
In the village of Sungai Nyalo, almost 100 km from West Sumatra’s capital Padang, the water level fell on Sunday, leaving houses, vehicles and crops covered in thick gray mud.
Authorities have not yet started clearing the roads, several residents told AFP, and no external aid has reached the region.
“The majority of residents decided to stay, they didn’t want to leave their homes,” said Idris, 55, who, like many Indonesians, has only one name and no surname.
In Thailand, authorities continued to search for missing people. The government has implemented aid measures for people affected by the floods, including compensation of up to two million baht (62,000 dollars) for families who lost members in the tragedy.
Criticism of Thailand’s response to the floods has increased and two local officials have been suspended from their roles.
No electricity
After Cyclone Ditwah advanced towards India on Saturday, entire areas in the north of Sri Lanka’s most populous city, Colombo, remained flooded on Sunday.
