Fugitive of the 8th of January, Brazilian sentenced to 14 years is arrested in Argentina
Brazilian Sirlene de Souza Zanotti, convicted of the January 8 attacks, was arrested this Tuesday (2) in Argentina. She was considered a fugitive and had an arrest warrant issued by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court. The arrest was confirmed by the The Globe.
Sirlene had been sentenced in March 2024 to 14 years in prison, in an initial closed regime, for attempted violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, coup d’état, deterioration of listed property and armed criminal association.

She was detained when trying to leave Argentina towards Paraguay. Since October 2024, the STF has authorized the extradition of 63 people investigated and convicted of January 8 who fled to Argentine territory, in response to a request from the Federal Police.
Sirlene’s defense confirmed the arrest and released a statement stating “deep concern about her detention in foreign territory”. Lawyer Hélio Ortiz declared that the case highlights violations of constitutional guarantees in processes that, according to him, were “politically motivated”, citing the presumption of innocence, proportionality and the right to a fair trial.
Sirlene’s extradition must follow the same procedure as the other fugitives located in Argentina, and the final decision will be made by the STF.
