Gleisi says that Messias’ defeat ‘opens up the opportunity’ to nominate a woman to the STF
Representative Gleisi Hoffmann (PT-PR), former Minister of Institutional Relations, said this Thursday that there is “an opportunity” to debate the nomination of a woman for the vacancy that is open on the Federal Supreme Court. In a historic defeat for the government in the Senate, the Minister of Attorney General of the Union, Jorge Messias, had his name rejected for the Court.
– It opens up an opportunity for us to have this debate, this discussion – said Gleisi.
Today the Supreme Court only has Carmen Lúcia as minister, the other nine members are men. Until 2023, the Court also had Rosa Weber as a representative. Weber was succeeded by Flávio Dino.

Opposition parliamentarians say that the president of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP), has committed to not making any new nominations for the STF before the elections. The idea would be to give the prerogative to fill the position to Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), if he eventually wins the presidential race.
On the other hand, Lula’s base wants the “Congress Enemy of the People” campaign to be reissued to put pressure on the president of the Senate. Within this strategy, the nomination of a woman would reinforce popular pressure for the name to be analyzed before the elections.
Gleisi also complained of betrayals within the government base in the vote that defeated Messias.
– It was betrayal that we had, there is no articulation that can explain it. (Betrayal) by those who said they were going to vote in favor and voted against, but as it is secret, they will look to see.
The deputy’s speeches came shortly after a second defeat for the government this week. Congress overturned President Luiz Inácio Lula’s vetoes to the law that reduces former president Jair Bolsonaro’s sentences in the case of the coup plot.
The Senate rejected a name for the Supreme Court after 132 years, imposed a historic defeat on President Lula and blocked the nomination of Jorge Messias to the Court. The setback for the government further strains the relationship with Congress, less than six months before the election.
Messias had 34 votes in favor of the nomination, seven less than necessary. There were 42 votes against.
He was nominated by Lula to fill a vacancy on the Court more than five months ago, but faced resistance from the opposition and, mainly, from the Senate leadership, especially from Alcolumbre.
