Illegal pest control in hotel kills German family in Türkiye
Negligence and serious security breaches
The tragic death of the Hamburg family not only caused deep consternation, but also shed light on serious security deficiencies and a series of long-standing, unresolved poisoning cases in Turkey. The family traveled to Istanbul on November 9 for a short vacation. The first health problems arose on November 12, when they sought hospital care with symptoms such as pain, nausea and vomiting.
After brief treatment, the parents and their two children returned to the hotel. On the night of November 13, their condition worsened drastically: shortly after being taken to the hospital, the two children, aged 6 and 3, died and, the following day, the young 27-year-old mother. The father died on November 17, after remaining in the ICU for a few days.
The suspicion: from intoxication to poisoning
Initially, authorities and doctors suspected food poisoning. The family had consumed several Turkish street food and fast food specialties. However, the hypothesis quickly turned to the hotel where the Hamburg family was staying after other guests showed similar symptoms of poisoning and were taken to area hospitals.
According to the hotel manager, highly toxic insecticides were used to combat bedbugs on site. Therefore, investigators began to consider chemical poisoning as the most likely cause of death. The investigation revealed disturbing details about the pest control company that operated at the hotel. According to statements, the owner did not have the necessary license or authorization to provide this type of service, nor did he have the appropriate training.
