Italy restricts nationality by blood right

Cidadania italiana permite que brasileiros tirem passaporte do país europeu

“The principle of blood law will not be abolished and many descendants of emigrants will be able to obtain Italian nationality,” said Italian diplomacy chief Antonio Tajani, after the Council of Ministers.

“But accurate limits will be established, especially to avoid abuse or the ‘marketing’ of Italian passports. Nationality must be a serious thing,” he added.

The ministry cites as an example Argentina, which has the largest community of Italian immigrants outside Italy, where 20,000 descendants obtained nationality by 2023 due to blood law, and 30,000 in 2024.

One of them was precisely Argentine President Javier Milei, who obtained citizenship in December during a trip to Rome by a rapid procedure.

Although the ultra -liberal economist complied with the requirements for his pepperoni ancestors, the measure caused indignation in the opposition that Meloni flexible the laws of citizenship to immigrants.

The Italian ministry also highlighted the case of Brazil, where 14,000 people obtained the Italian passport by 2022 and 20,000 in 2024.
