Linked to ruralists, Katia Abreu joins the PT and targets the government of Tocantins
Former senator Kátia abreu announced this Saturday her affiliation with the Workers’ Party, aiming for the electoral dispute in the second half of this year. Catholic, with a political past on the right and representative of large rural landowners, the politician who is tipped to run for government of the state of Tocantins promised to participate in the “fight for democracy and the re-election of President Lula”.
Kátia Abreu was in opposition to the PT during Lula’s first term, between 2003-2006, but later moved closer to the left and was Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) in the second Dilma Rousseff government, between 2015 and 2016.

After Lula assumed his third term, in 2023, the name of Kátia Abreu emerged for a possible nomination to the position of vice-presidency of Banco do Brasil, as a way of the PT member’s nod to the agricultural sector. However, the movement did not go ahead because the government assessed that Kátia was prevented by the law of state-owned companies from taking up the position, as people with relatives up to the third degree in executive or political party management positions could not take the position and she is the mother of senator Irajá Abreu (PSD-TO).
Kátia’s move to the PT was announced on the party’s social media. In the post, the political group highlights that the policy expands the capacity for dialogue with different sectors.
“PT Tocantins welcomes Senator Kátia Abreu today, a strong reinforcement to consolidate President Lula’s transformation project in our state. The reception, led by our state president, Nile William, and the president of PT Palmas, Rosimar Mendes, marks the beginning of a new stage of dialogue and action. Kátia’s arrival expands our capacity for articulation and reaffirms PT’s commitment to inclusive development and social justice”, wrote the party.
Although the former senator’s name has been floated for the Tocantins government dispute, the state president of the PT, Nile William, disagreed when asked about the topic. In the column by journalist Cleber Toledo, who covers local politics, he argued that the new PT member arrives to “be one of President Lula’s soldiers wherever she proposes to add”.
— Katia has this very strong understanding that we have to do whatever is necessary to guarantee a solid platform for President Lula here in our state — he added.
