Lula discusses Enel situation in meeting with Italian Prime Minister
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, spoke this Sunday (17), on the eve of the G20 meeting, about the situation of Enel, an Italian company that operates energy distribution concessions in Brazil.
According to a note from Palácio do Planalto, Lula mentioned the need for improvements in the services provided by the company, especially in São Paulo, which faced at least three blackouts in October.
Last month, around 2 million customers were left without electricity in the city’s metropolitan region. At the beginning of November, the Federal Attorney General’s Office (AGU) filed a Public Civil Action against the company, asking for compensation for consumers.
The Prime Minister of Italy, who currently holds the presidency of the G7, recalled that Italian companies have plans to invest 40 billion euros in Brazil, reaffirming the interest in updating partnership and economic cooperation agreements between the two countries, especially in development agendas, energy transition and food security.
Giorgia also mentioned the 800,000 Italian citizens and 30 million descendants of Italians who live in Brazil – almost 20% of the Brazilian population.
The meeting was attended by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira; da Fazenda, Fernando Haddad; from the Civil House, Rui Costa; of Agriculture, Carlos Fávaro, and of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira. Special advisor for international affairs Celso Amorim also participated.
