Lula jokes with Trump about the World Cup: “Don’t cancel the players’ visas”
The World Cup, which starts next month, was also part of the conversation this Thursday, in Washington, between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and his American counterpart, Donald Trump.
In a friendly tone, Lula joked with Trump when asking that the Brazilian team players not have any problems with immigration when entering North American territory.
“Him laughing is better than frowning”, says Lula about meeting with Trump
At the meeting, Lula said that issues “that previously seemed taboo” were discussed and expressed his willingness to create a working group to combat organized crime with Latin American countries.
Lula says he leaves “very satisfied” from meeting with Trump: “Important for Brazil and the USA”
At a press conference in Washington, the president reports a friendly atmosphere, mentions trade, tariffs, organized crime and critical minerals on the agenda and says he delivered three documents to Trump
“He asked about the World Cup and if the team was good. I told him: ‘I hope you don’t come and cancel the Brazilian players’ visas. Please don’t do that, because we’re going to come here to win the World Cup'”, said Lula.
According to the Brazilian president, Trump had fun. “He laughed, because now he will always laugh. He learned that laughing is very good.”
The 2026 World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026, in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The World Cup starts for Brazil on June 13th, when the team will make its debut against Morocco at the MetLife Stadium, in New Jersey, at 7pm (Brasília time).
