Lula tells ally that domestic accident was “serious”, but did not affect “delicate” parts

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated this Monday (21) that the domestic accident he suffered last Saturday (19) was “serious”, but highlighted that it did not affect the “most delicate” part of his head. Lula fell in the bathroom of the Palácio da Alvorada and injured the back of his head.

The statement was made during a telephone conversation with the PT candidate for mayor of Camaçari (BA), Luiz Caetano, who recorded the conversation on video and published it on his social networks.

During the call, the president explained that doctors requested a period of three to four days to assess the impact of the fall.

“I had an accident here, but it was stupid of me. It was serious, but it didn’t affect any more delicate parts. I’m waiting, because the doctors say I have to wait at least three, four days for them to know what damage the crash caused,” said Lula.

After the incident, Lula was treated at Hospital Sírio Libanês in Brasília, where he received stitches on the wound.

Due to the accident, the president canceled his trip to Russia, where he would participate in the BRICS Summit. However, he will participate on Wednesday (23) via videoconference.

On Monday morning, Lula received the Minister of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, and photographer Ricardo Stuckert at the Palácio da Alvorada. The president also met with Celso Amorim, his special advisor for international affairs.

The doctor who treated Lula, Antonio Kalil, told the newspaper The Globe that initial exams showed “minimal spots of bruising” on the president’s brain. Kalil emphasized that the hematoma is unlikely to evolve.

“What he had was a contusion in the occipital region, behind the head, which led to a so-called brain contusion, a minimal point of hematoma,” said Kalil.
