Mantovani family asks to recant before Moraes over hostilities in Rome

Businessman Roberto Mantovani, his wife, Renata Munarão, and the couple’s son-in-law, Alex Zanatta, asked to portray themselves with the minister Alexandre de Moraesof the Federal Supreme Court (STF), and with his family for the hostilities at Rome airport (Italy), in July 2023. With the apology, the defense seeks to end the process.

It is up to Minister Dias Toffoli, rapporteur of the case, to decide whether or not to accept the proposal. He must forward the request for analysis by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR).

The PGR denounced the family for slander and insult. Roberto Mantovani was also charged with the crime of royal insult. The STF ministers will still analyze whether they receive the accusations and open a criminal case.

The request for retraction marks a change in the defense strategy, which had been insisting that the accusations against the Mantovani have not been proven and that there is no minimum evidence to justify the opening of a criminal case.

In a statement to the Federal Police (PF), Moraes stated that he was called a “criminal, bought and a fraudster of ballot boxes”. The Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, concluded that “there is no doubt that the offenses were directed at Minister Alexandre de Moraes due to his status as a member of the Federal Supreme Court and especially as a member and president of the Superior Electoral Court”.

When analyzing the images from the airport’s security cameras, the Federal Police pointed out that Roberto Mantovani “apparently” hit Moraes’ son in the face with “hostility”.

The defense hired private experts to analyze the recordings. They claim that it was lawyer Alexandre Barci, the minister’s son, who attacked Roberto Mantovani with a slap to the back of the head.

The images are kept confidential. Minister Dias Toffoli claims that it is necessary to preserve the “intimacy of those involved and third parties who appear in the filming”.
