Motta rejects crisis with government and defends cuts that do not affect poorer

The president of the House of Representatives, Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB), rejected on Friday in an interview with CNN Brazil the possibility of breaking Congress with the government because of the impasse involving the tax on financial operations (IOF), while defending spending cuts that do not harm the poorest people.
In the interview, the mayor said the decision of Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), which suspended the government’s decrees on the IOF, as well as the legislative decree that has sustained the effects of the executive measure, as well as convening a conciliation hearing on the subject, will allow the parties to dialogue and reach a solution.
“Disagreeing at this point in the IOF does not represent a break with the government, it does not represent a break with the economic team. It is just a decision of Parliament, the National Congress not to agree with more tax increases. This is what we made clear,” he said.
Motta also signaled openness to support measures that increase taxation on people who earn more in Brazil, as well as a review of existing tax exemptions in the country.
The mayor also said that the government proposal of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of income tax exempt people who earn up to $ 5,000 will be approved. According to Motta, along with other matters that have passed the Congress, this approval will be further proof that the legislature is not against the poor.
