Political cradle: PT has the worst electoral performance in its history in the state of SP
The 2024 municipal elections will be marked for the Workers’ Party (PT) as the year of the party’s worst result in the state of São Paulo, its political birthplace.
The performance of the party, which currently governs the country, was even worse than that recorded in the 2016 and 2020 elections, during the height of the anti-PT movement and the party’s crisis.
Of the 645 cities in São Paulo, the president’s party Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva launched its own candidacies in 114 municipalities, but emerged victorious in only four: Mauá, in the Greater ABC region, and Matão, Santa Lúcia and Lucianópolis, in the interior.
The total population of these municipalities totals 507 thousand inhabitants, representing just 1.1% of the State’s more than 44.4 million residents, according to the 2022 Census.
The number of people elected in 2024 repeats the performance of four years ago, when four of the 137 PT candidates in São Paulo won the elections. However, in 2020, the party governed cities with a total population of 1.2 million inhabitants – Mauá, Diadema, Araraquara and Matão.

The national president of the PT stated that “the algorithm favors the type of conversation and intervention that gives rise to violence, hatred and prejudice”
In 2016, eight mayors were elected from a universe of 103 party candidates – Araraquara, Barra do Chapéu, Cosmópolis, Franco da Rocha, Itapirapuã Paulista, Motuca, Nantes and Rincão –, while in 2012, the PT had its best performance, electing 72 mayors across the state, including the current Finance Minister, Fernando Haddad, in the capital.
In addition to the reduction in the governed population, the party suffered symbolic defeats in several cities. In Araraquara, Edinho Silva, who was in charge of city hall for two terms and is tipped to assume the presidency of the party, was unable to appoint his successor. Dr. Lapena (PL), supported by former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), beat Eliana Honain (PT) and will be mayor of the city for the next four years.
In Diadema, current mayor José Filippi did not win re-election, in a year marked by the highest re-election rate in history. Taka Yamauchi (MDB), an ally of the re-elected mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), and governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), won with 47.39% of the votes, against 45.09% for his opponent.

In an interview with GloboNews, this Monday (28), head of Secom highlighted that none of Jair Bolsonaro’s (PL) former ministers – Alexandre Ramagem, Marcelo Queiroga and Gilson Machado – were elected this year
Furthermore, the PT was unable to reach the second round in cities where it used to perform well at the polls, such as Guarulhos, Osasco and São Bernardo do Campo. In Guarulhos, where Lucas Sanches (PL) was elected in the second round against Elói Pietá (Solidarity), Alencar, PT candidate, came in fourth place, with 9.67% of the votes.
In Osasco, where the election was decided in the first round with the victory of Gerson Pessoa (Podemos), Emídio de Souza came in second, with 15.07% of the votes. In São Bernardo do Campo, PT member Luiz Fernando came in third place, with 23.09% of the votes. There, Marcelo Lima (Podemos) beat Alex Manente (Cidadania) in the second round.
In Greater São Paulo, the PT’s only victory was in Mauá, where Marcelo Oliveira was re-elected with 45.13% of the votes, beating Atila (União) in the second round. In 2008, when it elected 60 candidates in the state, the party won in 11 cities in the region. Four years later, it dropped to six. In 2016, it dropped to one and, four years ago, the PT members won in two cities.
